Pre-Treatment Guide For Laser Hair Removal
What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser Hair Removal is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. This simple and non-invasive procedure targets highly concentrated light into a hair follicle to remove unwanted hair. The procedure is effective on hair with pigment, therefore, the treatment is not effective for blonde, grey or true red hair. Heat from the laser is absorbed by the pigment in the hair which tracks down the hair follicle. The heat prevents that hair follicle from reproducing. Most clients see sustained hair reduction after 6 to 8 treatments. This procedure is similar to, but should not be confused with, electrolysis, which delivers electric currents below the skin to destroy an individual hair follicle and permanently remove hair.
Laser Hair Removal is considered a safe, speedy and highly precise procedure. It should be noted, the procedure typically will leave only fine, light colored hairs intact. This is normal and common to everyone.
How To Prepare for Laser Hair Removal Treatment
- Shave treatment area
- Avoid UV exposure for 2 weeks prior
- Do not tan or participate in sunless tanning
- No waxing/tweezing for one month prior (hair must be in follicle for treatment to work)
What To Expect During Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment
If you have not shaved the area prior to treatment, your hair will be trimmed to a few millimeters from the skin. Your technician will perform a test spot and make adjustments to the laser according to the color, thickness and location of the hair being treated. Once proper treatment settings are determined, your technician will begin laser treatment to the area. Each laser application can simultaneously treat a 12-24 millimeter radius and the sensation is often described as a tiny rubber-band pop. A cooling device is used to ensure client comfort during the treatment. Most patients experience hair reduction (80%-95%) following 6-8 sessions.
