Clear, dewy skin is one of the most coveted traits people want right now and it starts with how well you treat your skin. That includes using the right products for your skin type, having a consistent skin care regimen as well as hydrating and including a clean diet in your daily routine. Start with the right at-home skin care regimen and if you don’t have one, consult with one of our skin care specialist to find out what’s right for you.
Another influential aspect of your life that can affect your skin is diet. In this case, “diet” doesn’t mean a weight loss plan; it simply refers to the way in which you eat. Everyone has a diet, whether they regulate it consciously or not. Here’s a look at what you should add and what you should eliminate in your daily diet to get skin that glows from within.
Highly Processed Foods
Most people are aware that over-consumption of highly processed food is simply not good for you. Whether you’re focusing on your waistline or your heart health, you’ve probably heard that it would be best to cut down on the amount of processed foods you consume. This also rings true for those who desire nicer skin. Over time, a diet consisting of highly processed foods causes inflammation in the body. This, in turn, can aggravate existing skin problems, such as acne. The refined sugars and grains found in processed foods also degrade the level of collagen and elastin in your skin, which leads to less firm and elastic skin, which can cause wrinkles and sagging to develop earlier than usual.
Fruits and Vegetables
Another common phrase most of us have heard since childhood is, “eat your fruits and vegetables!” Our parents probably weren’t focused on the quality of our skin when they told us this. However, fruits and vegetables are great for our organs, one of which is our skin. The vitamins in the fruits and vegetables we consume aid in skin cell production, the manufacturing of collagen, and the fending off of free radicals (a molecule in the body that can cause premature aging). Fruits and veggies can also provide a natural and highly attractive glow, according to recent research. Looks like our parents were right after all!
Water
Everyone knows that water is good for you. It makes up a large percentage of our body composition, about 60% in fact. However, did you know that water is especially important for your skin? Being properly hydrated allows for the nutrients you consume to reach your skin, which means that without water, our skin would essentially be depleted of all nutrients. Without enough water, our skin appears duller, drier and flakier. Since that is the opposite of youthful and dewy, be sure you stay well hydrated throughout the day to optimize your skin’s appearance. It is best to hydrate consistently throughout the day rather than consuming large amounts all within a short time and considering yourself finished for the day.
Changing your diet can be difficult, but in the end it is definitely worth it in order to keep your skin looking and feeling amazing. Once you’ve gotten your diet in order, then you can start to add in more specific skin treatments like chemical peels, facials, or Botox to amplify and enhance your beautiful, glowing skin!
